Booking your driving test in 2026: the rules that changed

Only you can book your test

Since 12 May 2026, only the learner taking the test can book, change, swap or cancel a car driving test. Your instructor, your parents and third-party booking services can no longer do it for you. They can still help you through the process — but the booking has to be made by you, from your own account.

You get two changes

Since 31 March 2026 you can make only two changes to the same booking. Use them carefully: if you need a third change you have to cancel and start again.

You can only move to nearby centres

Since 9 June 2026, a booked test can only be moved to your original centre or one of the three closest alternatives. Hunting nationally for an earlier date is no longer possible, so choosing the right centre at the start matters more than it used to.

Choose your centre carefully

Because of the three-centre rule, pick a centre you can realistically get to and one your instructor knows. Ask your instructor which local centres they teach around — the routes, junctions and manoeuvres differ, and familiarity helps.

What it costs

A car practical test is £62 on a weekday and £75 evenings, weekends and bank holidays. The theory test is £23. Book only through the official GOV.UK service.

My instructor booked my old test — is it still valid?
Tests booked before 12 May 2026 remain valid. Anything from that date has to be booked by you.

Is there a shortcut to an earlier date?
There is no legitimate way for a third party to book or move your test for you. Book when you are genuinely ready and choose your centre with care.
